Before Kumbabhishekam the concealed power in the stone idol is transferred by mantras to the Panchaloka Vigrahas of the same deity and kept immersed in turmeric water till repairs of the original idol, if any, and sanctum are done. On the day of the kumbabhishekam the power will be transferred back to the original idol, deity, in the Moolasthana and abhisheka and other rituals will be performed right from the top roof of the temple.

Kumbabhishekam is a cleaning process of the deity and the temple. Every day as abhishekas are done with milk, curd, honey, fruit juices and others, often repeatedly, the idol, getting this kind of shower for 12 years or more cannot escape some kind of rust of residue or something that escapes the cleaning, in the daily process, in some of the concealed joints of idol that can corrode the idol in the long run. So to clean these things Kumbabhishekam is performed.
