Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra states that “there
are many incarnations of the unborn Lord. Janardana
[Vishnu] has incarnated as the navagrahas or planets
to bestow on the living beings the results of their Karmas or
actions. He assumed the auspicious form of grahas to destroy the
strength of the demons (evil forces), to sustain the strength of the
devas (the divine beings) and to establish Dharma (religion or
faith).” (Parasara, 1995, p. 9)
With a thorough and careful study of the incarnation (avatar) of each planet, we can become acquainted with the personality of the planets. As they deliver the results of our actions (karma), the planets give rewards and challenges. However, it is important to always remember that the intent of all planetary action is to destroy our negative qualities and strengthen our good qualities. During times of stress, we are more likely to act from our lower nature which activates our negative Karmic patterns. Within these difficult moments lie the seeds of change.
During these times we have the chance to see our weaknesses and how our actions cause our suffering. Once we recognize the link between actions and suffering we are able to engage more positive coping mechanisms. In this article, I offer a brief profile of each of the planetary incarnations. Through study and meditation on these stories we can develop a feel for how each planet may react in challenging and supportive situations.
